The Next Discovery Map: What $3.4 Billion in New Geoscience is Revealing

07 May 2026
Riverside Theatre

Australia is a vast geological opportunity. The Federal Government’s $3.4 billion long-term investment in precompetitive geoscience is expanding and modernising our resource potential mapping – revealing critical mineral targets in both explored and under explored regions. But data and information without action is just data.

In this opening address, Andrew Heap, Chief of Minerals, Energy and Groundwater, will set the scene delivering a briefing for industry on the exciting activities Geoscience Australia will be undertaking to deliver modern and new precompetitive geoscience data and information to accelerate exploration through to development across Australia. With 80% of Australia still under-explored and new critical mineral targets emerging, such as recent rare earth announcements in WA , NT, NSW and Vic and tungsten and graphite announcements in Qld, the opportunity is there, but only for those prepared to act on it.
