Integrated Operator Alertness at Whitehaven’s Tarrawonga Mine
At Whitehaven Coal's Tarrawonga Mine, vehicle hierarchy protocols weren't enough. Operators needed richer context and proactive monitoring to manage fatigue and improve situational awareness through dust, darkness and distance. This case study unpacks how Whitehaven and Hexagon co-developed an integrated safety ecosystem — combining the Operator Alertness System with the Collision Avoidance System, including OAS 7.5 video capture of predicted collision events. From a 500-hour trial to over 10,000 operating hours, the partnership improved fleet-wide awareness, reduced fatigue-related risk, and gave safety teams context-rich data to refine practices. A working blueprint for miner–METS collaboration on safety outcomes.
Identify one high-risk vehicle interaction or fatigue exposure at your operation, and name the METS partner you could co-develop with to shift from protocol enforcement to proactive, data-driven prevention.
