Building Australia’s Next Generation of Mining Talent: How Industry Collaboration is Securing the Future Workforce
What happens when Australia’s largest mining companies decide to stop competing for talent—and start building it together?
The Minerals Industry Experience (MiEX) is an unprecedented collaboration between the Minerals Council of Australia, BHP, Rio Tinto, Idemitsu, Komatsu and Glencore. Partnering with leading universities, this initiative gives mining-curious STEM students immersive exposure to modern mining, challenging outdated perceptions and opening eyes to the innovation, technology, and career possibilities that define today’s industry.
In this session, the architects of MiEX share the story behind the partnership: why competitors chose to collaborate, what they’ve learned from the program’s first cohorts, and how the initiative is already reshaping the talent pipeline. With over 500 applications, 70 participants, and more than 60% female representation, MiEX demonstrates what’s possible when industry unites around a shared challenge.
But this isn’t just a success story, it’s an invitation. Hear directly from partner organisations about how the broader industry can contribute: hosting site visits, supporting hub sessions, or joining the collaboration as it scales nationally.
Audience will leave ready to:
- Advocate for early-career investment within your organisation
- Offer your site or expertise to support the next MiEX cohort
