Under the theme Embracing a New Era, GRX25 explored how the mining sector is responding to today’s challenges with transformation and tech-driven opportunities.
Adam Lancey, Asset President, BMA delivered the opening keynote highlighting the accelerating influence of technology in mining and the complexity of adoption. He urged better alignment of problems with solutions and offered an inspiring outlook:
“I believe that we are on the cusp of a new era in mining. A new era where mines are safer and more efficient than we can imagine, because we are using technologies in ways that we haven’t yet conceived and discovering resources that we never knew we could find, let alone extract and refine.”
Tim Ledbetter, VP Operations, Epiroc, examined how innovation and automation are reshaping the industry - boosting safety, enhancing flexibility and advancing sustainability. He introduced Epiroc’s LinkOA system, which enables gradual mixed-fleet automation, and cited real-world wins in emissions reduction and productivity.
“Our brave new world isn’t just about machines, it’s about people, purpose and progress.”
A dynamic panel moderated by Austmine’s Chairman Emeritus, Alan Broome, turned the focus toward leadership. With the industry facing skills shortages, rising expectations and the need for faster innovation, panelists emphasised the importance of emotional intelligence, people-centred leadership, and making mining appealing to the next generation.
“It’s not about the what or the why - we’re struggling with the how.” Geeta Thakorlal, VP Technology Australia, BHP.
“We need people to be on the journey with the strategy.” Steve Kovac, CEO, Idemitsu Australia
The message was clear: through inspiring leadership, cutting‑edge technology, bold innovation and a spirit of collaboration, the resources sector is driving a transformative and sustainable future.
